Between 2006 and 2010, the poverty rate in Richland County was 13.8%, over one percentage point higher than the rate for Illinois as a whole.1 Due to this high number of families living at or near poverty, there is a great need in this community for home repairs and light maintenance.
Seeing this need and sensing God’s call to serve, several congregations in Richland county joined together in 2010 to meet the needs of a number of local homeowners. Since then, over 250 volunteers have participated in three work days, performing repairs on over 60 homes, and building relationships across socioeconomic lines.
The members of First Presbyterian Church have been and continue to be heavily involved in Build Community. If you would like to participate in Build Community as a volunteer or would like to refer a homeowner in need of assistance, please send a request to firstname.lastname@example.org.
